Germany permits semi-autonomous weapon functions as UN moves on AI standards

UN states agree on autonomous weapon definitions while Germany clarifies military AI rules and Ukraine partners with NATO on operational algorithms.
International efforts to regulate artificial intelligence in defense are taking shape alongside concrete military deployments. In Geneva, 128 United Nations member states agreed on a standard definition for autonomous weapon systems, though the UN and Red Cross warned that automated targeting risks "crossing a moral red line."
Simultaneously, Germany confirmed military guidelines allowing certain semi-autonomous weapon functions without continuous human intervention during execution, provided overall force decisions remain human-controlled. Berlin also announced plans to build an independent data analysis platform rather than using software from US firm Palantir. Meanwhile, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two operational AI tools to predict hostile drone routes and assist artillery targeting for Ukrainian forces.
