UN and ICRC warn against moral red lines in autonomous warfare as military AI adoption expands

128 UN member states agreed on defining autonomous weapons as human rights bodies warned against automated targeting and European militaries advanced AI integration.
In Geneva, 128 United Nations member states established a common definition for autonomous weapon systems, prompting the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to issue a joint warning against allowing machines to autonomously target humans. The organizations stated that such capabilities risk "crossing a moral red line."
Concurrently, Germany's defense ministry confirmed that military framework documents permit certain semi-autonomous functions without continuous human step-by-step intervention, maintaining that "the decision on the use of military force remains with humans." Additionally, Germany decided against adopting software from US firm Palantir, opting to develop a national AI data analysis platform instead.
Meanwhile, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two operational AI models designed to forecast hostile drone flight paths and streamline artillery targeting support.
