UN defines autonomous weapons as Germany and NATO advance military AI

UN member states have defined autonomous weapons, while Germany clarifies its military AI policies and NATO partners with Ukraine on operational targeting tools.
In Geneva, 128 United Nations member states established a standardized definition for autonomous weapon systems, leading the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross to warn that automated targeting threatens "crossing a moral red line."
Simultaneously, Germany's defense ministry confirmed that military framework papers permit semi-autonomous weapon operations without continuous step-by-step human intervention, while maintaining that ultimate force decisions remain human-driven. Berlin also rejected adopting software from US firm Palantir, opting to build a sovereign AI data analysis platform.
Concurrently, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two operational AI models designed to forecast hostile drone trajectories and streamline artillery targeting support for Ukrainian armed forces.
