Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has urged Kyiv to start technical preparations for future democratic elections despite ongoing martial law.

Former Ukrainian Defence Minister Mykhailo Fedorov has called for administrative preparations to begin for future democratic elections, despite ongoing martial law prohibiting immediate voting. Dismissed by President Volodymyr Zelensky in July, Fedorov emphasized that establishing operational mechanisms early is essential to prevent significant delays once hostilities end.

Under current legislation, holding elections during martial law is illegal. However, Fedorov stressed that advance technical planning must resolve logistical hurdles, including voting access for millions of displaced citizens, refugees abroad, and military personnel on the frontline. While Zelensky's administration remains focused on national defense, Fedorov warned against postponing structural groundwork until a formal peace agreement is concluded.
