EU raises Red Sea alert as maritime threats rise off Horn of Africa

EU naval mission Aspides raises Red Sea threat level to high following Houthi attacks, while Somali pirates hijack a ship with eight Germans, prompting German naval redeployments.
The European Union's naval mission Aspides has elevated its security threat rating for the Bab al-Mandab strait and the southern Red Sea from medium to high following a Houthi attack on a Saudi oil tanker.
Meanwhile, security concerns in the broader region have intensified as Somali pirates hold a merchant vessel carrying eight German nationals captured last week in the Gulf of Aden.
In response to the volatile regional dynamics, Germany's Ministry of Defence announced the relocation of two naval ships from Djibouti, including the minehunter Fulda, to the eastern Mediterranean. German authorities cited the increasingly unstable situation in the Middle East for adjusting their naval posture.
