128 UN states agreed on defining autonomous weapons as Germany moves toward semi-autonomous systems and NATO aids Ukraine with AI models.

International efforts to regulate artificial intelligence in warfare have reached a milestone, even as nations expand military AI applications. In Geneva, 128 United Nations member states agreed on a formal definition for autonomous weapon systems. However, the UN and the International Committee of the Red Cross warned that automated targeting risks crossing a "moral red line."

Concurrently, practical military deployment is advancing. Germany’s Defence Ministry confirmed that certain weapon systems may operate semi-autonomously without human input at every step, provided overall command decisions remain human-controlled. Berlin also announced plans to build an independent military AI data platform rather than hiring US firm Palantir. Furthermore, Ukraine and NATO have jointly developed two operational AI models designed to forecast hostile drone paths and coordinate artillery strikes.
