Italy issues red heat warnings for 27 cities while Austria and Slovakia record historical temperature highs during an intense European heatwave.

A persistent heatwave across southern and central Europe has triggered red weather alerts and record-breaking temperatures. Italian health authorities issued maximum health warnings for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as the country faces its fourth severe heat period of the summer. Italian officials urged the public to stay indoors between 11:00 and 18:00, with temperatures expected to hover around 40°C for another week.

Further north, central European nations reported historic highs. Austria recorded a new preliminary national temperature record, with measurements ranging from 40.8°C in northern Vienna to 41.2°C in eastern parts of the country. In southern Slovakia, temperatures climbed to 41.4°C in Kamenica nad Hronom. Extreme heat conditions also continue to affect Hungary and France.
