EU interior ministers back Spain following record Ceuta migration influx
EU interior ministers commended Spain's response to an unprecedented migration surge in Ceuta while calling for stronger external border controls and cooperation with non-EU nations.
European Union interior ministers convened an emergency videoconference to address the unprecedented arrival of tens of thousands of migrants in the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. The meeting, convened at the request of Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and representatives from 22 member states, resulted in praise for Spain's rapid handling of the situation.
While most migrants have returned to Morocco, local reception facilities in Ceuta remain at capacity. In response, ministers called for tighter external border controls, enhanced early warning systems, and deeper cooperation with third countries to deter departures. Migration experts, however, cautioned that administrative regulations alone cannot prevent movement driven by socio-economic pressures.
