Scholar Alpo Rusi details Soviet intelligence threats against former Finnish Prime Minister Keijo Liinamaa during the late Cold War political transition.

Political science scholar Alpo Rusi has provided further details on Soviet intelligence operations in Finland during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Writing in a guest column for Iltalehti, Rusi examined the political maneuvering that took place during the final years of President Urho Kekkonen's presidency.

The analysis focuses on threats made against former Prime Minister and National Conciliator Keijo Liinamaa prior to his death in 1980. According to Rusi, Moscow's secret services actively tried to manipulate domestic politics in Helsinki to influence the succession of Finnish leadership. Liinamaa had reportedly disclosed these eastern intelligence threats to a diplomat shortly before his passing. The revelations highlight the scope of Soviet efforts to maintain leverage over Finnish governance during a sensitive period of the Cold War.
