An analysis shows Romania's power grid remains vulnerable during severe drought due to lagging grid investments, minimal storage, and curtailed hydropower output.

Romania's national power grid is experiencing acute strain as persistent hydrological drought reduces hydropower generation, according to an Energy Policy Group analysis shared by InfoClima.

Although the country maintains nearly 19 gigawatts in nominal installed capacity, actual daily output frequently drops to around one-third of that figure during peak environmental pressures. Reduced water levels along the Danube River have severely limited hydroelectric production, traditionally a core pillar of the country's baseload supply.

The analysis indicates that although renewable additions have progressed, systemic weaknesses—specifically insufficient transmission grid capacity, absent large-scale energy storage facilities, and delayed modernization projects—continue to undermine grid resilience during prolonged dry periods.
