Portugal's parliament has defeated a censure motion brought by far-right party Chega after the main opposition Socialists abstained.

Portugal's parliament has defeated a motion of censure submitted by the far-right Chega party against the country's minority coalition government. The vote followed a three-hour debate centered on controversies surrounding the internal administration minister.

The motion failed as expected after the main opposition Socialist Party (PS) abstained. Cabinet officials targeted both parties during the closing proceedings, criticizing Chega for submitting an initiative destined to fail and PS for refusing to vote against it.

Minister of the Presidency António Leitão Amaro stated that the public would make a "political judgment" regarding Chega's actions. However, cabinet representatives maintained that the executive still operates without a "preferred partner" in parliament and will continue negotiating on a case-by-case basis.
