New details emerge on KGB threats against former Finnish prime minister Keijo Liinamaa

Political scientist Alpo Rusi has provided further details regarding Soviet influence operations aimed at Finnish political leaders during the late 1970s and early 1980s. Writing in Iltalehti, Rusi highlighted covert actions by the KGB intended to shape domestic political outcomes and sway the presidential succession process in Finland.

Central to the disclosures are coercive threats made against Keijo Liinamaa, who served as Finland's national conciliator and prime minister. According to Rusi, Liinamaa faced intense pressure from Soviet operatives prior to his sudden death in December 1980, a matter he reportedly disclosed to a diplomat shortly before his passing. The revelations illustrate the extent of covert Soviet pressure exerted on Finnish governance during the Cold War era.
