Emergency crews in Spain face a massive wildfire deployment near Madrid and Ávila, though shifting winds offer a more favorable outlook for containment.

Emergency response teams in Spain continue battling major wildfires across western Madrid and eastern Ávila that have scorched roughly 20,000 hectares. Triggered by a roadside vehicle fire on the A-5 highway, the blazes rapidly spread across seven kilometers, crossing the San Juan Reservoir and destroying recreational infrastructure.

The situation prompted Spain's largest emergency deployment since the COVID-19 pandemic, affecting up to 45,000 residents through forced evacuations or confinement measures. While the fires temporarily exceeded containment capacity and threatened historical landmarks near El Escorial, officials reported that a shift in wind conditions has provided a "more favorable" outlook for control efforts. Emergency personnel remain on scene working to establish perimeters.
