A severe European heatwave has brought a record 40.8°C to Austria and triggered red health alerts in 27 Italian cities.

Extreme heat continues to affect large parts of Europe as southern and central nations report record temperatures and heightened health alerts. In Austria, the national weather agency GeoSphere documented a preliminary all-time temperature record of 40.8 degrees Celsius in Stammersdorf, north of Vienna, eclipsing the previous milestone established in 2013.

Meanwhile, Italian health authorities placed 27 major cities under maximum red heat alerts during the country's fourth major heatwave of the summer. The high-risk advisories expanded to include southern hubs such as Messina and Reggio Calabria, alongside warnings to avoid direct midday sun following multiple heat-related fatalities. Forecasts indicate persistent highs near 40 degrees Celsius across parts of Western Europe, extending pressure on emergency services and worsening wildfire conditions.
