Poland and Baltic allies advance military aviation modernization
Poland and Baltic allies are advancing air fleet upgrades, exploring Airbus A400M transports, establishing an Apache helicopter hub, and evaluating light turboprops for counter-drone defense.
Poland is moving forward with several military aviation projects alongside regional allies and defense contractors. Polish defense officials confirmed interest in purchasing Airbus A400M Atlas transport aircraft, potentially using European Union defense funding mechanisms. Poland recently joined six NATO allies—Belgium, Croatia, France, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom—in signing a letter of intent to cooperate on operating a shared transport fleet to replace aging aircraft.
Meanwhile, Polish state aviation enterprise WZL-1 signed an agreement with Boeing in Łódź to establish a regional maintenance center servicing at least 96 AH-64E Apache attack helicopters. In the Baltic region, Latvia is evaluating the acquisition of Embraer A-29 Super Tucano turboprops to counter drone incursions and hybrid threats, an aircraft platform also monitored by Polish defense planners.
