Severe heat and drought across Europe have pushed river levels to record lows, disrupting inland shipping along the Rhine and exposing groundwater risks.

Unrelenting heat and dry weather across Europe continue to drive water levels in major rivers to historical lows, creating severe challenges for shipping, ecosystems, and local water supplies. In Germany, hydrological authorities warn that low water levels along the Rhine, Elbe, Danube, and Lake Constance will worsen without substantial rainfall.

The Federal Association of German Inland Navigation reported that receding waters in the middle Rhine could soon interrupt continuous navigation, effectively splitting the key freight corridor into two distinct segments. Beyond commercial transport, prolonged dry conditions pose growing threats to groundwater reserves, drinking water supplies, and riverbed habitats. Receding waters have also exposed long-submerged artifacts across several European river basins, including ancient shipwrecks and prehistoric mammoth bones.
