EU sets emergency talks as death toll in Ceuta migrant crisis reaches 67

EU interior ministers will hold emergency talks on Tuesday after 67 migrants drowned attempting to reach Ceuta, as Spain rejects calls to alter Schengen rules.
European Union interior ministers will assemble on Tuesday for emergency discussions following a massive migrant surge into the Spanish North African enclave of Ceuta from Morocco. Initial media reports estimated that between 50,000 and 60,000 people crossed the border during the influx.
Discrepancies emerged regarding casualties as recovery efforts proceeded. Local authorities initially reported between 34 and over 40 drownings, but Spanish Interior Minister Fernando Grande-Marlaska later updated the official death toll to 67. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez stated that the uncontrolled crossings violated Spain's territorial integrity and confirmed plans to deport arrivals back to Morocco. Sánchez also rejected calls from 22 EU member states to suspend Schengen arrangements, dismissing the suggestions as politically motivated.
