US and Israel pause strikes on Iran pending rapid deal
The US and Israel have paused military strikes on Iran pending negotiations, despite recent Iranian missile interceptions and regional security developments.
The United States and Israel have temporarily halted planned military actions against Iran following requests from Tehran and neighboring Middle Eastern governments. US President Donald Trump announced the suspension on Truth Social, conditioning any permanent cessation on a rapid agreement that permanently eliminates Iran's nuclear capabilities and reopens the Strait of Hormuz.
The decision comes despite recent tensions, including the US military intercepting multiple Iranian ballistic missiles aimed at American forces deployed in the region. Trump asserted that US forces remain fully supplied and prepared should negotiations fail. Meanwhile, regional security efforts have escalated, with Saudi Arabia forming a maritime coalition to protect Red Sea shipping lanes. Additionally, Tehran has warned Cyprus and Bulgaria against allowing US military deployments on their territories. In response to potential diplomatic progress, Asian crude oil prices dropped by over five percent.
