Merging wildfires near Madrid prompted Spain's first-ever wildfire national emergency, as evacuations across Spain and southwestern France continue to mount.

Firefighters in Spain and France continue to struggle against expanding wildfires that have driven tens of thousands of residents from their homes. West of Madrid, several blazes combined into a single 6,000-hectare front advancing toward Navas del Rey. The Spanish government declared a national emergency—the first ever issued for a wildfire—after officials conceded the flames had surpassed local containment capabilities. Madrid regional authorities labeled the crisis the worst in the area's history, while Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez described the situation as "dramatic."

Meanwhile, in southwestern France, emergency crews deployed ships to evacuate coastal communities near Bordeaux and Arcachon Bay. More than 65,000 people have fled the region, where one blaze has grown to match the physical area of Paris.
