Severe wildfires across southwestern France and Spain have forced up to 325,000 people from their homes as extreme weather conditions hamper firefighting efforts.

Efforts to control severe wildfires across southwestern France and Spain have intensified as extreme weather conditions continue to hamper emergency responders. High temperatures and shifting winds have driven flames toward the outskirts of Bordeaux, prompting rail service suspensions and route modifications for the Tour de France. In Spain, authorities declared a national emergency to address spreading blazes across several regions.

Mass evacuations are underway across both nations, with estimates ranging between 250,000 and over 325,000 people displaced. In France's Gironde department alone, more than 42,000 hectares have been destroyed. Firefighters face additional hazards from an "unprecedented pyrocumulonimbus cloud" generating localized lightning and wind gusts, while officials in the Var region are investigating potential arson after three near-simultaneous ignitions were detected. Two firefighters have died during response efforts.
