Wildfires pushing toward Bordeaux have forced hundreds of thousands to evacuate across France and Spain, with officials warning of extreme conditions.

Wildfires in southwestern France continue advancing toward Bordeaux, burning more than 42,000 hectares in the Gironde department and claiming the lives of two firefighters. Regional infrastructure has suffered major disruptions, including the closure of the Bordeaux–Biarritz railway line.

Estimates regarding total displacement vary among reporting outlets. BBC News states that over 250,000 people have fled across France and Spain, whereas Helsingin Sanomat, citing news agency AFP, places the figure above 325,000. In Gironde alone, more than 220,000 residents have been evacuated. Emergency personnel face extreme weather generated by pyrocumulonimbus clouds, while authorities in the Var department suspect arson following three near-simultaneous blazes. French President Emmanuel Macron convened an emergency crisis meeting as high temperatures threaten to worsen conditions.
