Over 300,000 people have fled intense wildfires in France and Spain as extreme weather, rare atmospheric conditions, and suspected arson complicate containment.

Unprecedented wildfires across southwestern France and Spain have displaced up to 325,000 people as extreme heat and strong winds hamper containment efforts. In France's Gironde region, blazes have destroyed over 42,000 hectares, pushing flames toward the Bordeaux metropolitan area, forcing rail closures, and altering Tour de France routes. Two firefighters have died during containment operations.

France's firefighters union reported that the massive blazes formed a pyrocumulonimbus cloud, a rare meteorological phenomenon that generates localized strong winds and lightning, exacerbating fire spread. In the Var region, local authorities suspect arson after three near-simultaneous ignitions occurred. Meanwhile, Spain has declared a national emergency as fires expand across several regions. French official data indicates over 115,000 hectares have burned nationwide this year.
