A persistent summer heatwave brings record-breaking temperatures and heightened health risks across Western and Southern Europe.

A relentless wave of extreme heat continues to sweep across Western and Southern Europe, driving temperatures toward 40 degrees Celsius and causing thousands of excess deaths.

In Italy, health authorities issued red weather alerts for all 27 major cities during the country's fourth heatwave this year. Meanwhile, Austria recorded its highest temperature on record, with suburban Vienna reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius.

Health concerns are escalating across the continent. French health ministry data indicates more than 7,300 excess fatalities during 52 heatwave days recorded between May and July. As Britain and France brace for further intense heat, officials warn that persistent dry weather will worsen ongoing drought conditions and heighten the threat of wildfires.
