Slovak ruling coalition forms far-right alliance amid cabinet tension
Slovakia's ruling coalition has entered its first formal regional pact with the far-right Republika movement as cabinet tensions rise over minister dismissals.
Slovakia's governing coalition is navigating internal turmoil alongside an unprecedented regional pact with the far-right Republika movement. In the Trnava region, gubernatorial candidate Peter Hambálek announced his campaign with formal backing from Smer, Hlas, SNS, and Republika, marking the first open electoral alliance between the ruling parties and the far-right movement.
Simultaneously, cabinet cohesion remains strained following the parliamentary dismissal of Environment Minister Tomáš Taraba. The vote was driven by Slovak National Party leader Andrej Danko in cooperation with opposition lawmakers.
Despite the cabinet friction, reporting from Prime Minister Robert Fico's hometown of Topoľčany shows steadfast voter support. Local supporters largely absolve Fico of blame for the government's difficulties, attributing political instability to coalition partners or opposition movements.
