U.S. President Donald Trump has threatened the EU with tariffs over a proposal to grant Canada associate membership status in the bloc.

U.S. President Donald Trump has warned the European Union that Washington could impose severe tariffs or restrict trade if Brussels moves forward with closer institutional ties to Canada.

The threat follows European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's proposal to establish Canada as the bloc's first associate member. Trump described the plan as "ridiculous" and suggested it could represent a hostile action depending on European intentions.

Diplomatic friction between Ottawa and Washington has intensified recently, prompting Canadian officials to seek stronger ties with European partners. Finnish President Alexander Stubb previously highlighted Canada's growing alignment with Europe over the U.S. Trump indicated that any potential retaliation would depend on whether Brussels acted in good or bad faith.
