Thousands of migrants remain in Ceuta amid disputed arrival figures

Between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in Ceuta following a mass border surge, as conflicting arrival estimates and political fallout continue in Spain and Morocco.
Local authorities in Ceuta estimate that between 3,000 and 5,000 migrants remain in the Spanish enclave following Thursday's mass border crossing, out of an estimated total of up to 80,000 arrivals reported by regional President Juan Jesús Vivas.
Official numbers continue to diverge. Morocco's Interior Ministry acknowledged 40,000 entries into Ceuta and 1,135 into Melilla, alongside 11 fatalities on Moroccan soil. Rabat rejected claims of relaxed border controls, attributing the influx to a recent Spanish Supreme Court ruling while criticizing European political rhetoric.
In Madrid, political fallout intensified after the Spanish government dismissed a National Security Department communications official following an unapproved report citing 49,000 entries. Meanwhile, Spanish military forces continue detaining and deporting migrants at the border.
