Russian hospitals quarantined after plague death in Irkutsk region

Multiple hospitals in Russia's Irkutsk region have been quarantined after a laboratory worker died from pneumonic plague.
Several medical facilities in Russia's Irkutsk region have been placed under three-week quarantines following the death of a 27-year-old anti-plague institute laboratory worker from pneumonic plague.
Local health authorities and consumer welfare watchdog Rospotrebnadzor stated that the situation in the region remains "stable," adding that tests on 189 hospitalized contacts returned negative for the infection. However, independent outlets reported that multiple hospitals and a maternity ward in Irkutsk and neighboring Shelekhov were sealed off, triggering public concern over potential official underreporting.
Uncertainty around the incident has fueled widespread rumors in the area as officials maintain that all necessary containment measures are in place and secondary transmission has not occurred.
