Flávio Bolsonaro leads Lula da Silva into Brazilian presidential runoff
Flávio Bolsonaro took a surprise lead over President Lula da Silva in Brazil's general election, sending both candidates to an October 25 runoff.
More than 158 million Brazilian voters were called to the polls in a highly polarized general election determining the presidency, state governorships, and congressional seats. Incumbent President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, seeking a fourth term at age 80, faced Senator Flávio Bolsonaro, who represented the conservative political movement led by his father, former President Jair Bolsonaro.
With over 92% of votes counted in the first round, Flávio Bolsonaro achieved a surprise lead with 47.89% of the vote against Lula’s 44.15%. The outcome defied pre-election polling that had placed Lula ahead. Both candidates now proceed to a runoff election scheduled for October 25. Historically in Brazil, no presidential candidate leading after the first round has ever lost the final vote.
