Russian ground advances in Ukraine hit near-zero net gains in September, prompting renewed long-range strikes on Kyiv's energy grid ahead of winter.

Russian ground advances in Ukraine stalled through late September, with independent tracking groups reporting near-zero net territorial gains across a four-week period despite Moscow's claims of battlefield success. Reports indicate September was among the least productive months for Russian territorial expansion, while localized Ukrainian counter-attacks reclaimed areas near Oleksandrivka.

With ground movement largely frozen, Russian forces intensified long-range strikes against Ukrainian heating and power infrastructure ahead of winter. Ukrainian Prime Minister Serhij Koreckyj stated recent overnight attacks on facilities in and around the Kyiv region represented the largest targeted operational assault on energy systems since the previous heating season. The strikes occurred as Ukrainian air defense efficiency declined, with drone interception rates dropping from 92 percent in May to 83 percent in September.
