Severe drought and extreme heat across Western Europe have driven Rhine River water levels to historic lows, disrupting commercial shipping routes and compounding pressures on German agriculture.

Severe drought and sustained high temperatures across Western Europe have pushed water levels on the Rhine River to historic lows, disrupting commercial navigation along Germany's primary inland waterway.

Gauge measurements at key transit points, including the critical bottleneck at Kaub in Rhineland-Palatinate, have fallen into single digits, matching records unseen since 1880. Downstream monitoring stations at Cologne, Düsseldorf, Duisburg-Ruhrort, and Emmerich project further declines through the end of the week. Freight vessels have been forced to sharply reduce cargo loads to prevent grounding, requiring multiple voyages for standard freight volumes and raising concerns over potential navigation halts.

The persistent dry conditions are also weighing on agriculture, with German grain harvest projections falling to an estimated 40.6 million tonnes from 45 million tonnes last year as meteorologists forecast continued extreme heat.
