Rhine water levels have plunged to historic lows at critical points like Kaub and Cologne, disrupting commercial freight shipping and compounding agricultural losses across Europe.

Persistent high temperatures and severe drought across Western Europe continue to push water levels on the Rhine to critical historic lows. At key measuring points including Kaub and Cologne, water markers have fallen to their lowest levels since 1880, with the Kaub gauge dropping into single-digit figures.

The depletion of Germany's vital commercial waterway is severely disrupting inland shipping, forcing operators to drastically reduce vessel loads and raising concerns over potential navigation shutdowns. Transport authorities project further declines downstream at hubs including Düsseldorf, Duisburg-Ruhrort, and Emmerich through the end of the week.

Beyond logistics, the prolonged dry spell is placing severe pressure on European agriculture. Industry estimates project German grain harvests to drop to approximately 40.6 million tonnes this year, down from 45 million tonnes in 2025, as meteorological services warn of continued extreme heat.
