Record ocean heat and strengthening El Niño drive worldwide weather extremes

A developing El Niño and rising ocean temperatures are driving extreme heat, wildfires, and floods worldwide, with forecasters warning of further record-breaking conditions.
Global climate patterns continue to intensify as the developing El Niño event combines with human-induced global warming, driving record temperatures and extreme weather worldwide. According to data from the European Union's Copernicus service, extra-polar sea surface temperatures reached record highs in July, coinciding with Europe's hottest recorded June–July period.
Meteorologists, including experts at the UK Met Office, warn that the current phenomenon could become the strongest in living memory, making upcoming years "very likely" to set new global temperature records. The converging climate pressures are already generating severe impacts across multiple continents, including expansive wildfires in Europe, destructive rainfall in Asia, and severe drought threats across the Amazon basin. Analysts note that these compounding disruptions present escalating risks to international agricultural yields, global supply chains, and energy infrastructure.
