Record July ocean temperatures and El Niño conditions are driving severe heatwaves, droughts, and weather disruptions worldwide, according to climate data.

Global ocean temperatures reached unprecedented levels in July as climate change and an intensifying El Niño pattern drove extreme meteorological events worldwide. According to the European Union's Copernicus climate monitoring service, average sea surface temperatures outside polar regions reached 20.96 degrees Celsius, establishing a new record for the month.

The warming trend coincided with the hottest combined June and July period recorded in Europe, which exacerbated severe droughts and spurred widespread wildfire activity across the continent. Concurrently, environmental researchers warn that compounded oceanic and atmospheric heating is magnifying weather volatility internationally, including flooding in parts of Asia, agricultural disruption, and anticipated severe drought conditions across the Amazon basin. Analysts note these compounding factors indicate heightened climate risks for subsequent years.
