Record drought has driven Rhine water levels to historic lows, raising fears of supply chain bottlenecks and shipping halts across Germany.

Record-breaking temperatures and persistent drought across Western Europe continue to drive water levels in major rivers toward historic lows. Hydrological authorities warn that low water levels across the Rhine, Elbe, and Lake Constance are expected to intensify further without near-term rainfall relief. At the critical gauge of Kaub, water marks have fallen to their lowest levels since 1880, posing an escalating threat to commercial freight.

The Federal Association of German Inland Navigation warned that critical bottlenecks in the middle Rhine could soon prevent continuous passage, effectively splitting Germany's primary waterway network into two disconnected segments. In response to mounting supply chain disruptions, several German states have temporarily relaxed Sunday driving restrictions for heavy goods vehicles. However, logistics operators caution that driver shortages and aging road infrastructure severely limit the capacity to shift freight from barges to highways.
