A persistent European heatwave has brought red warnings to 27 Italian cities and record-breaking temperatures to Austria and Slovakia.

A fourth summer heatwave has swept across southern and central Europe, prompting maximum health warnings and setting preliminary temperature records. Italian authorities issued red weather alerts for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures were projected to remain near 40°C for another week. Health officials urged residents to stay indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 and take precautions, amid reports that four people have died due to heat-related conditions.

Central European nations also registered extreme highs. Austria recorded a preliminary national record after temperatures reached 40.8°C in northern Vienna on Tuesday, beating the previous 2013 benchmark, with later readings reaching 41.2°C in the east. In southern Slovakia, temperatures hit 41.4°C in Kamenica nad Hronom. Record conditions were additionally reported across parts of France and Hungary.
