Norway's King Harald V has died at age 89 at Rikshospitalet in Oslo. Crown Prince Haakon succeeds him as monarch following 35 years of rule.

Norway is in mourning following the death of King Harald V at the age of 89. The royal palace confirmed he passed away peacefully on Friday morning at Rikshospitalet in Oslo after being treated for a blood condition and a bloodstream infection.

Harald ascended the throne in 1991 and ruled Norway for 35 years under the motto "All for Norway". Following his passing, his son, former Crown Prince Haakon, has succeeded him as monarch.

European leaders and royalty expressed grief over the news. Swedish King Carl XVI Gustaf offered condolences for his close friend, while citizens gathered outside the royal palace in Oslo to place flowers as flags were lowered to half-mast.
