Norway's King Harald V dies at age 89

Norway's King Harald V has died at the age of 89, succeeded by Crown Prince Haakon after a 35-year reign.
Norway’s King Harald V died at the age of 89 on Friday morning at Rikshospitalet in Oslo, the royal court announced. The monarch, who was Europe’s oldest reigning sovereign, passed away peacefully following treatment for a rare blood condition, hemolytic anemia, and a bacterial infection.
Royal family members gathered at his bedside prior to his death as public concern grew in recent weeks. Following the announcement, the royal standard at the palace was lowered to half-mast, and citizens gathered outside to leave flowers.
Harald V ascended the throne in January 1991, governing under the motto "All for Norway" for over three decades. His son, Crown Prince Haakon, has succeeded him as the country's new king. Tributes poured in across Europe, with Sweden's King Carl XVI Gustaf voicing "great sadness" at the loss of his close friend.
