Wildfires in southwestern France and Spain have forced up to 325,000 people to evacuate, pushing flames toward Bordeaux as firefighters struggle against severe weather conditions.

Firefighters continue battling expansive wildfires across southwestern France and Spain as extreme heat and high winds push flames toward Bordeaux. French authorities report over 42,000 hectares burned in the Gironde department alone, contributing to 115,000 hectares scorched nationwide this year.

Displacement estimates vary among sources, with reports ranging from 250,000 to over 325,000 people evacuated across both nations. In France's Gironde department, 220,000 residents have been displaced, while flames disrupted regional infrastructure, closing the Bordeaux-Biarritz railway and altering Tour de France routes. Two firefighters have died during containment efforts.

French President Emmanuel Macron held an emergency crisis meeting as officials warned they "are far from having the fire under control." The French firefighters' association noted an unprecedented pyrocumulonimbus cloud creating localized winds and lightning. Meanwhile, local authorities in Var launched arson investigations following three simultaneous fire outbreaks, and Spain declared a national state of emergency.
