German officials vow to defend democratic freedoms after police shoot dead 21-year-old Berlin Pride attack suspect Abdul Ballout.

German authorities and political leaders have pledged to uphold democratic values following the fatal shooting of 21-year-old attack suspect Abdul Ballout in Berlin. Politician Friedrich Merz stated that Germany would "defend our freedoms" after Ballout drove a van into a Pride event on Saturday, killing one person and injuring 29 others, before attacking bystanders with a knife and machete.

Further details regarding Ballout's background indicate he had previously attempted to join Islamic State in Syria, leading to his arrest in Lebanon and subsequent extradition to Germany. After serving time in juvenile detention, he was offered deradicalisation sessions, which he rejected. Investigators confirmed the rental vehicle used in the attack was booked under his name. Following a 20-hour manhunt, police located Ballout in a Spandau shed, where he was killed in an exchange of gunfire.
