Germany's government faces mounting pressure from AfD poll gains, SPD leadership challenges, mass protests in Plauen, and declining asylum figures.

Germany’s federal government is confronting escalating political challenges across multiple fronts. A recent Deutschlandtrend survey indicates the Alternative for Germany (AfD) has expanded its lead over the opposition CDU/CSU alliance, while public support for case-by-case cooperation with the party continues to grow.

Simultaneously, internal friction within the ruling Social Democratic Party (SPD) has intensified. The party's "AG Migration und Vielfalt" working group called for an autumn special party conference to replace current leadership, alleging the present executives have failed.

On the streets, thousands gathered in Plauen under the initiative "Einigkeit für Deutschland" to demand the federal government's resignation. Meanwhile, Federal Interior Ministry data showed first-time asylum applications fell to 4,311 in July, representing an almost 50 percent drop compared to July 2025.
