Severe heatwaves across Europe trigger national temperature records, red weather alerts in 27 Italian cities, and thousands of excess deaths in France.

Southern and Western Europe face worsening conditions as a series of intense heatwaves continues to impact the continent. Italian authorities issued top-tier red weather alerts across 27 major cities, including popular tourist destinations, as temperatures climbed toward 40 degrees Celsius. Public health officials advised residents to stay indoors during peak daylight hours following four heat-related deaths.

In Austria, meteorologists registered a national temperature record of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess fatalities linked to 52 days of extreme heat since mid-June. Forecasters warn that both France and the United Kingdom are preparing for another wave of temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius, exacerbating widespread drought and wildfire conditions across Western Europe.
