Extreme heatwave brings record temperatures and health warnings across Europe
Europe faces ongoing extreme heat as Italy issues red alerts for 27 cities, Austria sets a temperature record, and France reports thousands of excess deaths.
A persistent heatwave across Europe continues to trigger high temperature alerts and health concerns. In Italy, the health ministry extended red weather warnings to all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures were expected to reach 40 degrees Celsius. Authorities advised residents to avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 and 18:00 following at least four heat-related deaths.
Temperature records were also broken elsewhere on the continent. Austria registered a national record high of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days recorded since mid-June. Meteorologists warn that severe heat, drought, and wildfire risks will persist, with France and the United Kingdom bracing for further spikes up to 40 degrees Celsius.
