Severe heatwaves across Europe trigger red weather alerts in Italy, record temperatures in Austria, and thousands of excess deaths in France.

Widespread heatwaves continue to cause severe weather conditions across Europe, bringing record-breaking temperatures, elevated health risks, and thousands of excess fatalities.

Italian health authorities issued red warnings for all 27 major cities as the country faces its fourth heatwave of the season, with temperatures approaching 40 degrees Celsius expected to last for another week. Public officials urged residents to avoid direct sunlight during peak hours following four recent heat-related deaths.

Elsewhere, Austria registered a historic temperature record of 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. In France, health officials reported over 7,300 excess deaths across 52 heatwave days between May and July. Meteorological agencies in France and the United Kingdom warn that incoming temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius will escalate ongoing drought conditions and wildfire hazards.
