Western and Central Europe face a fourth heatwave, bringing record temperatures, elevated health risks, and red alerts across major Italian cities.

Western and Central Europe face a fourth intense summer heatwave, with extreme temperatures straining public health systems and setting historical records. In Italy, health authorities issued red warnings across all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius persist. Officials advised residents to avoid direct sunlight between 11:00 and 18:00, following at least four recent heat-related fatalities.

Austria recorded its highest temperature in history, reaching 40.8 degrees Celsius near Vienna. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days since May. Further warnings remain in place across the region, including in the United Kingdom and France, where emergency services are preparing for ongoing drought conditions, elevated wildfire risks, and sustained high temperatures.
