Extreme heatwaves sweep Europe as Austria records a historical high of 40.8C, France counts 7,300 excess deaths, and Italy issues red alerts across 27 cities.

A severe heatwave continues across Europe, triggering health warnings, record temperatures, and excess mortality. In Austria, a suburb near Vienna recorded the country's highest temperature on record at 40.8 degrees Celsius. Meanwhile, French health authorities reported more than 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days recorded since May.

In Italy, health officials issued red alerts for all 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, as the nation experiences its fourth heatwave of the season. Authorities advised the public to remain indoors between 11:00 and 18:00 following at least four heat-related deaths. Britain and France are preparing for further surges, with forecasts predicting temperatures reaching 40 degrees Celsius amid widespread drought and wildfire risks across Western and Southern Europe.
