Southern and Western Europe face a fourth summer heatwave, with temperature records broken in Austria and health warnings issued across Italy and France.

Southern and Western Europe are bracing for continued extreme conditions as a fourth major heatwave spreads across the continent. Italian authorities issued red health alerts for 27 major cities, including Messina and Reggio Calabria, advising the public to remain indoors between 11:00 and 18:00.

Temperature records continue to break across the region. Austria registered its highest temperature on record at 40.8 degrees Celsius in a suburb of Vienna. In France, health officials reported over 7,300 excess deaths linked to 52 heatwave days recorded since May. Meanwhile, Britain and France are preparing for persistent high temperatures near 40 degrees Celsius, accompanied by severe drought conditions and heightened wildfire risks.
