Ursula von der Leyen proposed making Canada the EU's first associate member while warning against foreign interference and ultranationalism in her annual address.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen delivered her annual State of the European Union speech in Strasbourg, proposing to grant Canada the status of the bloc's first "associate member". The initiative aims to deepen bilateral cooperation in defence, economic security, and clean energy. Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney attended the plenary session as a guest of honor.

During her address, von der Leyen warned that ultranationalist political forces and Russian interference pose active risks to European stability. She called for enhanced European sovereignty through unified defence initiatives, energy independence, and new digital safety measures, including a continent-wide social media restriction for children under 13.
