EU highlights border security as reported death toll rises in Ceuta migration crisis

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen emphasized EU border security as reported fatalities in the Ceuta migration crisis reached up to 86.
Following Spain's military deployment to Ceuta, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen stated that the vast majority of migrants who entered the North African enclave have returned to Morocco. Von der Leyen noted that the situation underscores the vital importance of protecting the European Union's external borders.
Meanwhile, casualty figures from the migration attempt remain inconsistent across reports. Local authorities cited by Sky News reported that the death toll has reached 86, contrasting with earlier figures citing between nine and 18 fatalities. High migration pressure has also reportedly affected the neighboring enclave of Melilla, even as Moroccan security forces maintain heightened road and border checkpoints to restrict movement toward the coast.
