Discrepancies and political friction linger after Ceuta border surge

Spanish authorities and local officials remain at odds over migrant numbers in Ceuta six days after a major border crossing at El Tarajal.
Six days after the El Tarajal border surge in Ceuta, significant discrepancies persist over arrival numbers. Central government officials report approximately 2,500 remaining migrants, including 500 unaccompanied minors, whereas regional authorities estimate 6,000 remain. Ceuta's President Juan Vivas previously claimed up to 80,000 crossed.
Administrative fallout intensified after the Spanish government dismissed a communications official over an alert citing 49,000 arrivals, citing a "loss of trust." Concurrently, political friction emerged between the Defense and Interior ministries regarding military personnel conducting border turnbacks.
With regional authorities reporting 88 deaths associated with the crossing, the Guardia Civil established a dedicated office to process missing persons reports and assist with victim identification.
