Death toll rises to 13 following major earthquake in southwestern Japan

At least 13 people are confirmed dead and thousands displaced after a magnitude 7.1 earthquake struck Kumamoto Prefecture in southwestern Japan.
The death toll from a magnitude 7.1 earthquake that struck Japan's southwestern island of Kyushu has risen to at least 13. Japanese Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi confirmed that "extensive damage" was reported across Kumamoto Prefecture, while local media indicated the final tally could reach dozens.
Rescue efforts remain underway, particularly at a damaged shopping center in Kashima where an upper floor collapsed following a reported explosion. Structural destruction to roads and bridges continues to hinder emergency teams as more than 9,000 displaced residents remain in evacuation centers. A tsunami warning issued shortly after the earthquake has since been lifted.
